Ever felt like your groundbreaking idea was just too early? Or that the path to success in the digital age is constantly shifting? This past week has offered a fascinating glimpse into both the challenges and the incredible opportunities in the creator economy and media tech. From surprising acquisitions to personal hackathon victories and game-changing networking, the journey of building something truly impactful is rarely linear, but always rewarding.

The Unforeseen Rise of Media Startups: A 2017 Vision Vindicated

Back in 2017, the idea of a "SportsCenter for X" – specifically for education tech – seemed revolutionary to me. The concept was simple: bring the engaging, digest-style news format of sports broadcasting to the world of educational content. Imagine a daily show summarizing the latest in ed-tech, helping aspiring creators and innovators. I passionately pitched this to Y Combinator, only to face rejection.

"Back then, it was always Uber for X... when I pitched SportsCenter for X to YC a few years ago, it was just way too early."

Fast forward to today, and the landscape is dramatically different. We've seen major media companies acquire innovative content platforms: Morning Brew by Business Insider, The Hustle by HubSpot, and most recently, a daily tech show being acquired by OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. This latter acquisition is particularly telling, as it grants OpenAI access to a deeply loyal, tech-focused audience and positions their editorial team at the forefront of new launches. What YC didn't foresee in 2017 – the multi-million dollar potential of media companies built on niche, loyal audiences – is now a reality.

This shift validates an enduring principle:

"It's never too late to build an incredible media company and a loyal fan base and have a lot of success from it."

Democratizing the Creator Economy: visionaryPass Takes Flight

My journey continues with visionaryPass, a platform dedicated to democratizing access to the creator economy. The goal is to provide aspiring creators with the tools, knowledge, and connections traditionally reserved for those with capital or extensive networks. This vision recently took a significant step forward.

I participated in a hackathon in Oakland, California, where I built a product focused on connecting YouTubers with verified experts and mentors. Many aspiring creators struggle with knowing where to start or how to scale. This platform aims to bridge that gap by offering access to experienced guidance.

I was thrilled to place third in the hackathon, earning an achievement award and, more importantly, an invitation to present at their upcoming Demo Day on Saturday, April 11. It's a live concert, pitch competition, and experience that I'm beyond excited to be a part of. This has been a week of intense preparation, refining the pitch, and strategizing how to best share visionaryPass with potential investors and future customers.

The Power of Unexpected Networking: A Citi Panel Experience

Beyond building, networking remains a cornerstone of entrepreneurial success. My friend Andy the Banker, known for his finance-focused TikTok and Instagram, is redefining networking in Silicon Valley by hosting events at unexpected venues: bank branches.

I recently attended one such event, featuring a three-person panel discussing their diverse business journeys and offering advice. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow business owners in the Bay Area. In a delightful surprise, a program I previously worked on even received a shout-out during the panel:

"So, I did a 30-day build in public challenge... Justin Harris was actually one of them in this group."

This experience highlights the value of building in public and the ripple effects of consistent effort.

The Entrepreneurial Reality: Highs, Lows, and Persistence

While social media often showcases the triumphs, the entrepreneurial journey is filled with challenges. Balancing product market fit, resource allocation, and content creation (like YouTube) is a constant juggle.

"It's been an up and down battle. A lot of people don't see the down part... it's been a struggle. You know, we're barely surviving. We're barely hanging in there."

Despite the hurdles, the passion for the work drives everything forward. The evolution of digital media, the burgeoning creator economy, and the power of community continue to inspire and push boundaries.
